Write a short (5ish) sentence response to the section we read in class today. I think this quote is a pretty interesting spot to think about:
"The jurors laughed. They were a mob. Hands grabbed at the mike. Kevin looked anxiously at me. I could do nothing. With all the buttons and switches at my command, I was helpless to change anything on the other side of the glass.
'I got a simple question for you. What's the matter with you? Huh? Huh?'
'Why can't you be normal?'"
What comments/questions/predictions/connections do you have about the section we read today? Please read everyone's comments before posting, because someone might post an interesting question you'd like to answer.

1. The strange thing about Star Girl is that she seems to be a prejection of everything a human being SHOULD be. She has a positive, sympathetic personality and lives to witness the gaity of others. She is not afraid to be kind, as her peers are. She cares about everything, no details are overlooked when she is searching for something positive to say or do. And yet, through this caring for others, she has the heart to forget herself. When she has a bad day, she doesn't dwell on about it in a miserable trance, but rather looks out at the sun and sings. She doesn't seem to realize that indifferance towards others is the norm at Mica High. So during the hotseat, it takes her a while to register that her positive energy was harming rather than helping her fellows. She was showing them what they didn't want to see: Selflessness and the nerve to stand out to show what they belive in. When Star Girl is accused of being abnormal, she is simply being accused of being the better person. Not one of the jurors would have wanted to be insulted in such a manner- and Star Girl would never have done it. The Mica High studant body sees her as an inferior, a freak. And Star Girl, wether she has agnologed this or not, acts as if each day was the last day to be the kindest person she can be. That's why she is being harrased. She was kind
ReplyDelete2. As for my prediction, I'm convinced Star Girl will do what she has always done: try to make people happy. And if that means backing off, she might have trouble with it, but she'll do it. On the surface, at least. She might act as an invisible hand, giving out bikes to the unfortunate, inserting cards in mailboxes when a big event comes up. No matter how much her peers want her to act "normally" and just ignore strangers, keep to herself and stay generally silent, Star Girl will stay bold and persist in being the best she can be. Even if that means acting in secret.
ReplyDeleteStargirl is the kind of person that doesn't understand when people are picking on her. But then again she is the one doing stuff like cheering for the other teams. But then the other cheerleaders went a little to far by telling the bus driver that they had everybody and left her at the other school.
ReplyDeleteI agree with hawkeye32 about her not knowing that other people are picking on her, I can think of one person right now who is the same way, so this aspect is definatly one that is universal, every school I would imagine has people like this, but the making fun of part SHOULD not be universal, but unfortunaltly it is as well, at least here at Peet. She is different and I think that it is hard for people to know what to do with people who are different, they don't know what to think or do because they are used to everyone looking up to the Hillary Kimball of the school and paying no attention what so ever to the "nerd" group. They are taking advantage of the fact that she does not know that they are being mean to her. I just thought of this: Do you think Stargirl knows and simply does not care that other people are making fun of her or does she truly not know? Maybe Stargirl knows but she does not care. When someone is different all eyes are on her "look at what she is wearing" "Did you see what she just did?" I hope that Stargirl keeps being different and ignores negative comments, Stargirl is truly what everyone SHOULD be like...kind, caring and unjudging. She lets no one be left out or unnoticed, she does not pay attention to the "leaders" of the crowd which is great. fanoftales has some great comments by the way.
ReplyDeleteI think everybody needs to treat Stargirl with some respect. They need to learn to deal with her different behavior. And honestly, I think they're jealous of her. If they weren't, they probably wouldn't make such a big deal about getting in her face about everything. I think she's teaching everybody some important things, but nobody's catching them.
ReplyDeleteI think that they were just being plain rude. They were not respecting her at all. I don't think that they should air that on telivision. Stargirl is a perfect romodel. She is respective, honest, kind, generous, and more. She steps out of her way to do something. Everyone seems to want to fit in, but Stargirl doesn't she wants to be different, everyone sees that but they can't accept it. They don't like different. People just need to respect other people's attitudes and let them just be them. You can't be yourself if you are someone else or a copy of something. "The truth will set you free but first it will make you miserable."--unknown I think that this is a great phrase because they can't accept her, so that means that they think she is not there, but she really is and they just can't admit it. "Avoid disputes--- you never get much out of an argument as you put into it.--unknown I think that the jurors need to learn this. They can't learn if they shout and cause a choas. They need to ask with kindness and without rudenss. You never learn anything from disputes. You just get older and meaner. Stargirl avoided disputes she didn't care about them. She ignored any rude comments that people say, I think this is what we need to learn today. We always keep fighting for no reason and we get nowhere. Stargirl just lets it go, but people keep bugging her about things. They just need to accept her as she is.
ReplyDeleteI think that Leo kinda let Kevin take advantage of him when he told him that Stargirl could go on HotSeat. I felt really bad for her because everyone was just comming at her with all these mean comments and I don't think she really knew how to handle that. She thought she was doing the right thing, bringing everyone in the school together for the best, when really it seems as if she was bringing them together for the worst. Now I think stargirl might end up leaving the HighSchool..I hope not:(
ReplyDeleteI think that it was dumb of them to start making fun of her just because she is more out going than everyone else at that school. I think she will then become less popular because most of the school was supposed to be watching the hotseat as predicted. And she might leave the school because no one might like her after what everyone else said about her -- She's different.
ReplyDeleteI think Stargirl is pretty cool. She doesn't seem to care what other people think of her but cares for everyone. She wants everyone to be happy even if they don't like her. I think that she is starting to realize what people think about her and she might change
ReplyDeleteI agree with kit kat on allot of his/her comments. I forgot to include my prediction with my post previously this week. I hope like I said before that Stargirl keeps being the way she is, she is what a person should be. But part of me fears that she will possibly become a changed person because of other people. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteAll the jurors are basically fascinated with Stargirl, even though it might look like they dislike her. There is nothing normal about Stargirl, but there is nothing normal about anyone on Earth. Everyone has different opinions of "normal". I think Mica's opinion of normal is not standing out and blending in with the crowd.
ReplyDeleteStargirl has these qualities about her, qualities that draw people to her. She is like a breath of fresh air and sunshine to Mica, they just haven't realized it yet.
If Stargirl took a break from school, they would realize life would be a lot more boring without her.
I think they shouldn't have made fun of her the way they did. I sort of saw that coming though. I also think it will get worse from here, and that they will keep making fun of her. I think she might go back to being homeschooled.
ReplyDeleteBoy, the jury was being very rude! I sure hope Stargirl is OK! She may be different, but she does need a little respect. I think something interesting will happen, but to be honest, it could be anything. Maybe Hot Seat will be completely off the air forever because of this "incident". Maybe Stargirl will leave Mica High School for good. Who knows?
ReplyDeleteI think everyone has questions about Stargirl that they want answered. The first questions were rather normal and innocent. It was her actions at school, activities, and in the community that morphed those questions into the mean, intruding, and nosy questions asked by the jury on Hotseat. I think that Stargirl may have a breaking point. When it is is a major question. Another thought is that someone will talk to Stargirl about the mean and degrading things said to her, and she will defend her self, and lash back. The only question is when, and maybe at all.
ReplyDeleteI thought the Stargirl we read was a really exciting part. What the people did was way mean. Stargirl was nice to all of them and help them. If it wasn't for her they would all still be boring losers.I don't get what their problem is.
ReplyDeleteI think that it was rude what the studnts did to stargirl. Stargirl is different but that doesnt mean that all the studnt have to make her feel bad about it. I think that it was ok for stargirl to cheer on the other team.
ReplyDeleteI thought star girl being on the hot seat was pretty cool since it was like the interview of the century i guess. I don't think they should of given the mic to the audience because i pretty much already knew that was going to happen to her
ReplyDeletePeople should just give Stargirl a break. It's not like she's doing anything wrong. The jury just couldn't figure out how to put themselves in her shoes. She's a very giving and nice person, and like Destiny said, just because Stargirl is different doesn't make her bad.
ReplyDeleteI think the people at Mica High School should leave Stargirl alone. I really agree with what Anna:) said. All I think she is trying to do is bringing joy to people who don't notice it for themselves. It's not a bad thing! Also, I think that Kevin and Leo are going to be really good friends with Stargirl, maybe just Leo, and they will be able to tell/show the other people that its ok to be different. I kind of see why the people would be mad at Stargirl for cheering for the other team, but I also think, that she didn't really realize the difference. And, again, I think that everyone should give her a break.
ReplyDeleteI think that the students should treat her better, and think about how much of a difference she caused in their school. With out her they were all acting the same and even though they still aren't very "original" they realized how different people can be. I agree with Anagha and Anna about trying to bring joy to people.
ReplyDeleteI don't think she deserved the way she was getting treated, the kids should have not been so mean on her. Yeah I agree when people said that they should give her a break, shes just trying to make it into a school and probably be like everyone else.
ReplyDeleteWow, folks, I am super impressed by your comments! The discussion that's happening here is exactly what I hoped for. I think it's interesting to think about the breaking point, and if Stargirl has one or not. I also like the assertion that others might be jealous of the impact she is able to have on the Mica student body. After the section this week, what do you think about her breaking point? Do some of you still think she might move away or stop going to the high school?
ReplyDeleteI don't think that the kids should have done what they did. I think that their school spirit got in the way of their thinking. Although she kinda had it coming to her, but even if she did have it coming to her, that does not excuse what those children did to her.
