Extra Credit Stargirl Response

So sorry I forgot to post today. I literally got out of bed to do this because I just remembered. I'll give extra credit on this until 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 7.

Remember, this post is for extra credit (about 2 points, though I may give more if you participate a lot). I thought the section of Stargirl we read today was really interesting. I'm most interested in what you think her actions say about her character, or what you think of them (the pledge, the funeral attendance, the bike). I'm going to leave your response this time up to you--comment on something that interests you right now about the book. If you have a question for the group, post it, and check back in to see what people thought. I will look forward to hearing what you have to say.

  1. I think that Stargirl just wanted to help out the family. I think it was really nice of Stargirl to buy a bike with her own money for the family. I don't think that it is right for the family just to tose it out because no one will admit in giving it to them. I think that Stargirl was just showing support to the family who lost someone. They just had another person support them, and they just kick her out. She was being respectfull and didn't take an credit for anything or take anything from the funeral attendance. Stargirl was just being herself and saying prayers for all the animals because they don't a lot of credit. She is just saying that they need credit for God making them and she wanted to tell about them.

  2. Question: Wouldn't you want people that you know and don't know support you in your lost? Why do you think that the family kicked her out of the house??

  3. It is my belief that Star Girl was simply being over imaginative when she rewrote the pledge, however, she did risk offending someone. This might also prove to be a cry for more attention and popularity. She is probably getting used to her peers staring at her in awe, rather that goggle at her strangeness. As for what this shows of her personality, Star Girl has most likely never cared what people thought of her. She lived to please herself, and be kind to others. Now that she sees that her kindness is gaining her attention as well as personal well being, she has begun to think that she is, so to speak, invincible in the world of popularity. No matter what she does, people will still look up to her. Taking that belief with her, she goes to the funeral, a kind gesture,of course. She was trying to be there for her fellow class mate, to mourn the lost spirit. Of course, the family wanted to mourn only with the people close to the dead, as a gesture of honor and loyalty. Of course, Star Girls's excentric reputation did not help matters here, most likely giving off the impression she would attempt something crazy in this time of sorrow.
Now the bike, well, that was really the recipitants over reacting. Star Girl was trying to help, trying to save the family an expense. It would have been nice had she givin her name, but it was still a kind gesture. The family was still in shock, about almost losing their child, and I suppose Star Girl could have agnolaged that, or at least assured the family she had sent the bike once she saw how much trouble it had caused. I find it odd how Star Girl tends to work annonymously, never saying who cares about the citizens of Mica. I think she is shy, because no one had ever really cared about HER as much as she reaches out to others.

  4. I really love how Stargirl doesn't care about what others think of her. I also love how giving she is to everybody. I really wish the mom of the boy who got in the bike accident would've accepted the bike Stargirl gave them. I also wish the mom of the dead family member would've yelled at Stargirl. She was only trying to help. I think that it's great that she's helping everybody out, and everybody needs to respect that. Just because it's not normal in their society, doesn't mean it's wrong. I wish we could all be like Stargirl, always reaching our hand out to others and not being selfish in anyway. I'm really excited to see how the rest of the book goes! :)
